Feelings of inferiority can be crippling with social, emotional and psychological effects that last for years if not addressed – with BWRT® you can overcome these feelings and live a fuller life!

What does inferiority look & feel like?

It goes without saying you cannot tell by looking at someone what they feel inside.   Some people with feelings of inferiority are attractive, fun, sensitive, financially secure, clever and adaptable. Indeed other people might admire them for their achievements and natural gifts. Whilst inside and in private the person with feelings of inferiority might be screaming “get me out of here, I can’t bear it”. Such a person might appear to be painfully or extremely shy, but could also be the bloke in your local pub whose company you enjoy the most because he is such a good laugh.   A person with issues with inferiority can know that s/he is beautiful, skilful, clever, loved etc, but still somehow, in spite of it all may feel worthless, unworthy of your company, or of the good opinion of others. Indeed compliments and praise might even make them feel worse.

Inferiority might show up in body language, standing or sitting hunched, legs crossed, arms folded across the chest,  or hands folded in the lap, maybe fiddling with a bag, handkerchief or some other object. It might show as an inability to make or sustain eye contact, the voice may sound small and hollow, with an overall effect of the person appearing to shrink. But it is also true that a person who feels the need to compensate for a feeling of inferiority may make themselves appear larger and therefore more dominant by taking up more space, using expansive gestures, a loud voice, sarcasm and a discomfiting stare.

Those who are used to the signs and symptoms of inferiority will be able to spot them easily, or maybe not at all. Some sufferers become accomplished actors to get through life.

A person with a sense of inferiority will suffer in a variety of ways. They might have psychological symptoms of feeling unworthy, less-desirable, incomplete, or unwanted.  Or they might have inability to deal effectively with confrontation, avoid challenges, or accept underachievement through fear of failure.  He or she might have physiological symptoms of nausea, sweating, racing heart-beat, feeling faint or giddy; the voice may dry up, the hands shake, in fact the person might under certain circumstances feel completely paralysed.

In a lot of cases emotional symptoms will include stress, anxiety, depression, obsessive thoughts, social anxiety, insomnia – and this can lead to an exacerbation of existing medical conditions too.

The Causes of Inferiority

There are a multiplicity of causes for a person’s feelings of inferiority. There could be a root cause in the way a child is reared whether from a spiteful or a loving parent. Schooling, social background, bullying at school or in the workplace could all be contributing factors.  Or the cause could be something that occurs much later in life such as redundancy which can make a person feel unwanted, or useless. Impotence which can make a man feel less masculine and unable to relate comfortably with other men.  A breakdown of a relationship with a child/parent or partner can feel like a profound rejection shaking a person’s belief in his or her own purpose in life or place in the world.

It is also possible that some deficit or excess can be at the root of it – having a stutter, sudden or early balding,  being overweight, or having a disfigurement for example might lead to a profound loss of self-esteem.  Often there is often a negative perception of self in comparison to others which might seem out of all proportion to the sufferer as well as those close to him or her.

In the past therapy could go on for months or years talking about feelings, memories and dreams, in an attempt to uncover and resolve the first cause.  Or there might be attempts to retrain the way a person thinks about themselves and to adjust how they respond to certain situations and avoid getting caught in the downward spiral of a negative feedback loop.

BWRT & Inferiority

bwrtBWRT® or BrainWorking Recursive Therapy is not like any therapy you are likely to have encountered. It is down-to-earth, tried and tested, evidence-based, client-centred and solution oriented.   It is based upon a scientific understanding of the neurological function of the brain and works with your grain rather than trying to get to you behave out of character.  In fact since the resources and ideas for change originate in the your brain they are usually the best fit, and BWRT® is gentle, fast, and almost always permanent.

BWRT® works by using your brain’s natural way of functioning to bring about the change you need. It stops patterns of unwanted behaviour, and banishes limiting beliefs. It has several protocols designed to help you shed guilt and low self-esteem, to overcome the tendency to avoid success, and to help you achieve your dreams.

You have nothing to lose but your chains

All BWRT® practitioners are fully trained, professionally insured and follow a strict code of ethics and rules regarding Continuing Professional Development. We are also registered as practitioners so that you can look them up and make sure of their qualifications.  I am an advanced (level 2) practitioner of BWRT® which means that I can help you overcome some of the more ingrained and difficult to shift core identity issues. You can check my registration with the British BrainWorking Research Society  or the Institute of BrainWorking Recursive Therapy .

Just one of the many great aspects of BWRT® is that you needn’t even leave the comfort of your own home. Using Skype, FaceTime or Zoom I have worked with people as far from east London as Weston-super-Mare, Lincolnshire, Cambridge, and Scotland to name but a few. Working in this way can sometimes mean being able to obtain appointments at awkward times of the day, and as long as you have the space and time available to speak openly and honestly without fear of interruption, intrusion or being overheard it can be an excellent way of working.
