Past Life Regression

Hello and Welcome to this blog post in which I shall be looking at Past Life Regression.

Past Life Regression Hypnosis

Where do we come from?

I am a hypnotherapist in Chigwell, Essex, who uses a variety of open minded approached to assisting the emotional development of my clients.
Past Life Regression Therapy is one such approach. There is a lot of debate around the subject, and not all hypnotherapists agree.

What is Regression?

First of all what is regression? Regression is basically the process of taking someone back to an earlier age so that they can relive it again. Suppose a person has a fear of dogs.  That person might be taken back to the original event that caused that fear. Approaching that situation from a different age and perspective and with the expertise of the therapist can help relieve the tension and resolve the fear: regression to cause.

Regression can be spontaneous – it can happen all by its self.  A person can also be regressed in hypnosis.  A person might also regress in extreme circumstances, or illness. If you think of someone who is very old but who now behaves as a child and cries out for her parents – this is a form of regression.

During therapy sessions a person might temporarily return to patterns of speech, and postures they used as a child.  They might babble, or curl up.

When a person is taken back to what appears to be a life lived before this one, this is called Past Life Regression.

Why Do You Use Past Life Regression?

Sometimes there isn’t a choice. Sometimes a client will automatically regress to what appears to be a past life. During this regression they can apparently recall “memories” of previous lives.  Intrigue and fascination aside, those who experience a past life regression often feel that they have learned something of value for this life.  Sometimes they “find” a reason for certain patterns of behaviour, or symptoms, which suddenly change or improve. In fact a past life regression can work in exactly the same way as a regression to cause.

Past Life Regression ChigwellInterest in past lives is part of that question we all ask ourselves from time to time: why am I here? Some people believe that they might find answer that cannot be answer in this life from a past life.  For example a person who is musical but comes from a tone deaf family, might wonder where that talent arose.  A person with a passion and affinity with a particular language or culture might wonder if they were a different nationality in a past life. There are all sorts of reasons why people choose past life regression, some aim at a therapeutic outcome, others are simply for the experience, and possibly knowing.

Is Past Life Regression Proof of Reincarnation?

Can knowing where we started help us on our way forward?

In his book Children who Remember Previous Lives Professor Ian Stevenson presents what some people regard as compelling evidence of reincarnation. But it doesn’t follow that everything that seems to be remembered during past life regression is actually real.   After all we can be entirely mistaken about things we experience in this life.

Even people who do not believe in a soul or an afterlife have experienced past life regression. For some people that has been a really wonderful experience leading to a life time of research in the case of Dr Brian Weiss for example.  You can read his book Many Lives Many Masters for his experience. Other people regard the whole notion of past life regression with suspicion or dismiss it entirely. Whilst others – Buddhists like Ajahn Sumedho, for example, encourage investigation.

My view is this: in the same way you have the right to know what is happening to your body when you visit the doctor, so I believe everyone has the right to explore the possibility of having lived a past life.   I keep an open mind as to what the “recovered memories” indicate.
